Joomla 2.5, 3.0, and beyond

So never fear your development team has been working hard to get a handle on what's happening with Joomla versions and we finally found some great stuff!

I've been reading about the development roadmap for 2.5, 3.0 and beyond and found out why versions are coming more rapidly and what's in store. Basically 2.5 kind of makes it easier to upgrade for the future releases and 3.0 is all about going mobile. http://community.joomla.org/blogs/community/1594-developers-joomla-3-is-coming.html

So I got with my team yesterday at the Big Idea lab and decided to see how hard it would be to upgrade a 1.5 to 2.5 site using some components that we found. First the good news:

    1. We found an extension that migrated all the articles and modules for us.

    1. Upgrading templates wasn't as hard as we thought and requires just a few code hacks. (still testing)

Here's the not so good news:

    1. Extensions are not automatically up-gradable.

    1. Each website must be analyzed individually for an estimate.

So here's my thinking on all of this. Joomla 1.5 end of life is looming which means it will be unsupported (no further releases). This isn't a big deal if you just want your website to last for the next 3 years or less. If you want your website to keep up with technology you need to upgrade especially with 3.0 looming.
