In our first year of designing websites it was comprised mostly of networking and referrals. Building a local network is one of the best ways to get the easiest clients. About 4 years into it I realized I needed to do more if I was going to achieve my vision of a larger company. The networking results had plateaued and was becoming routine and uninteresting. I realized in order to grow I needed to expand my market outside of my geographical area.
This was a lot harder than I expected. Understanding internet marketing and executing effective campaigns is extremely complex. The thing that makes this most difficult is the landscape is ever changing and it is a constant moving target.
It took a year until I was able to fully understand and provide search engine optimization services. Then in 2012 everything changed when Google declared war on SEO companies who manipulated search results. Since that time it has become abundantly clear that SEO is a holistic all comprehensive approach. Providing just one service like social media management or link building isn't going to go very far.
2012 was a turning point for our business. We found Hubspot as a marketing automation tool but more than that became part of a community of internet marketers with unelimited resources. That has allowed us to have more national visibility and better expertise in the industry.
